What is unclaimed property?

Unclaimed or “abandoned” property refers to property or accounts held by financial institutions or companies that have had no owner initiated activity or contact for a period of time specified by state law.

What are some examples of unclaimed property?

Some examples of unclaimed property include uncashed checks, inactive savings and checking accounts, and in some cases, unused balances on prepaid or gift cards (depending on state law).

Why did I receive a letter about unclaimed property?

You are being contacted because records indicate you may be the rightful owner or heir of property that has not been claimed.

How did my property become unclaimed?

Property typically becomes unclaimed when there has been no owner initiated activity on your account or no contact from you for a period of time specified by law. Once this period has passed, The Bancorp Bank, N.A. (“the Bank”) must, in accordance with state unclaimed property laws, report and remit the property to the appropriate state unclaimed property division, depending on the registered address of the account.

How do I claim my property?

Follow the instructions provided in the letter and submit the completed claim form with supporting identification, such as a copy of a clear, valid, and non-expired, driver’s license, passport, state-issued ID or military ID. If your name has changed, include legal documentation, such as a copy of a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order or other government-issued certification. Do not send original documents, as they will not be returned. We do not accept electronic signatures for unclaimed property claim forms.

Is there a deadline to claim my property?

Yes. To claim your property directly from the Bank, you must submit your claim before the property is turned over to the state’s unclaimed property division, as indicated on the letter. Once the property has been transferred to the state, you will need to file your claim directly with the state’s unclaimed property division. State processing times vary and may take several weeks or months.

Is there a fee to claim my unclaimed property?

No. The Bank does not charge a fee to claim your property directly from the Bank. However, some states allow unclaimed property holders to deduct reasonable mailing or publication costs as part of the notification process. Be cautious of third-party “finders” or companies that offer to recover your property for a fee.

How long does it take to receive my property once I submit a claim?

Processing times may vary. In most cases, you can expect to receive your property within 2 – 4 weeks after we receive all required documentation.

How do I know this is not a scam?

Legitimate unclaimed property notices will reference The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and include clear instructions for submitting your claim. We will never ask for sensitive personal information over the phone or via email without proper identity verification.

What if the property belongs to a minor or court appointed individual?

For a minor please provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate and legal documentation showing proof of guardianship.

For a court appointed individual include a copy of court issued documentation such as a conservatorship order, guardianship papers, or any other legal/court documentation demonstrating your authority to act on their behalf.

What if the property belongs to a deceased individual?

You may submit a claim on behalf of the estate. To do so, please provide a copy of the death certificate and copies of legal documentation showing your authority to act for the estate, such as probate documents, short certificate, court affidavit, letters testamentary or of administration. We cannot accept a will or trust as proof of authority.

What happens if I don’t respond?

If you do not respond or do not provide the necessary requested information within theapplicable timeframe, the property will be turned over to the state’s unclaimed property division as required by law. You will still be able to claim it, but will need to file your claim directly with the state’s unclaimed property division.
