FDIC Continues to Warn against Fraudulent Emails (7/22/2011)

The FDIC continues to receive numerous reports of fraudulent emails that have the appearance of being from the FDIC.

The most recent messages appear to be from various “@fdic.gov” email addresses, such as “protection@fdic.gov,” “admin@administration.fdic.gov” and “service@admin.fdic.gov,” and they have various subject lines, including “Update for your banking account,” “ACH and Wire transfers disabled” and “Banking security update.”

These emails and the links included in them are fraudulent and are not being sent by the FDIC. Recipients should consider the messages an attempt to collect personal or confidential information, or to load malicious software onto end-users’ computers. Recipients should NOT access links provided within the body of the emails and should NOT install any related files or software updates.

Be aware that these fraudulent emails may be modified over time with other subject lines, sender names and narratives.

Please be reminded that the FDIC does not directly contact bank customers, nor does the FDIC request bank customers to install software upgrades. If you receive an email that appears to be from the FDIC that you are not expecting, do not open it or access any links provided in the body of the message – simply delete it or move it to your spam folder.

For additional details, visit the FDIC’s Web site at http://www.fdic.gov/consumers/consumer/alerts/index.html.
